Challenge Message

Connecting traditions and bringing new values and possibilities of lacquer to the world. Tsutsumi Asakichi Lacquer Shop is a material store that creates the future of lacquer culture.

Product, service, and business features

A lacquer raw materials manufacturer established in 1909, the company supplies lacquer for the restoration of national treasures and important cultural properties such as Nikko Toshogu Shrine.
On the other hand, the company has also developed original products such as Urushi x Surf, Urushi x Skate, and Urushi x BMX to communicate the new possibilities and values of Urushi. Many companies that share his passion for lacquer have placed orders for lacquer processing and product development in a variety of fields.
At the factory and the adjacent store “Und.”, visitors can observe the lacquer manufacturing process, as well as participate in hands-on tours and workshops (advance reservations required; fees apply).

Exhibition Details

Lacquer is a sustainable natural material that has been used since the Jomon period. Tsutsumi Asakichi Lacquerware Shop offers surfboards and skateboards made from wood and lacquer that are gentle on both people and the earth. These products transcend the boundaries of traditional crafts and art, conveying the new possibilities and values of lacquer and expanding the circle of empathy. At the venue, we plan to exhibit surfboards made from urushi trees and lacquered skateboards made from bear bark, which is obtained by bears damaging the bark of trees such as cedar.
